The Nature Conservancy will restore 178 acres of wetland habitat at six sites across the Calumet region in Illinois. Specifically, this project will treat 138 acres of invasive species and restore 40 acres of wetland hydrology through the construction of a water control structure. Additionally, the project will perform breeding wetland bird surveys at sites throughout the region in Illinois and Indiana to document impacts of restoration and inform adaptive management. This project is part of a regional effort to restore and manage habitat for declining wetland birds in the bi-state Calumet region. The project will also provide a baseline for observing breeding bird responses to restoration actions and benefit a suite of declining wetland birds as these sites are restored and maintained.
