Restoring Coastal Wetlands at Toussaint State Wildlife Area (OH)
Grant Recipient:

Grant Awarded:

$608,810

Lake Basin(s):

Erie

Project Location(s):

Toussaint State Wildlife Area

The Toussaint State Wildlife Area is a 231-acre coastal wetland and upland complex adjacent to the Toussaint River, approximately 4.5 miles upstream from Lake Erie. Failed and improperly placed infrastructure have significantly reduced the ability to manage water levels within the complex, leading to impaired habitat quality and reduced aquatic connectivity. The Nature Conservancy will work with Ducks Unlimited to restore and enhance approximately 125 acres of emergent and lowland shrub wetlands by replacing failed and installing new infrastructure, controlling invasive species and restoring native vegetation. This phase II implementation project will result in increased capacity to manage water levels and aquatic vegetation, improve the ability to control invasive species, and increase wetland habitat connectivity for fish and wildlife.
