The Alliance for the Great Lakes and partners preserved and restored coastal habitat at three parks in Milwaukee County. Major restoration work included invasive species control, grassland enhancements and native plant installation. The project restored 53 acres of fen and other areas infested by phragmites. This work contributed to reduced erosion, thereby providing critical coastal refuges within the southern Lake Michigan basin and enhancing the ecological functions and of habitat at these sites. Volunteers were engaged both in conducting habitat assessments and conducting small scale restoration events. Project partners include the Natural Areas staff of the Milwaukee County Department of Parks, Recreation and Culture and University of Wisconsin Extension’s Regional Natural Resource Program.
