Project Location(s):

The Spencer Creek watershed near Hamilton, Ontario

The Hamilton Conservation Authority is relocating a berm to reconnect floodplain habitat with Lower Spencer Creek, a tributary to western Lake Ontario. This work should improving fish passage and spawning habitat for northern pike and other fish. The Lower Spencer Creek restoration project has three core design objectives: sediment transport continuity, ecological restoration, and increasing access to the stream corridor. Currently, Lower Spencer Creek has no floodplain connection due to the entrenched, channelized morphology. The first phase of the project is to re-connect 300 meters of the lower portion of the creek to its floodplain, which will also allow for the removal of invasive plant species and the re-vegetation of the new floodplain.
