Muskegon River Watershed Assembly facilitated the removal of Hersey Dam and related spillway structures in order to restore natural stream conditions to the Hersey River. The Hersey River, a high quality cold water stream, is a primary tributary to the Muskegon River. The dam was degrading water quality, primarily through thermal pollution, and preventing free migration of aquatic organisms between the Hersey and Muskegon Rivers. This project helped restore aquatic connectivity and riparian habitat to 7.5 of river Project partners included Michigan Department of Natural Resources, Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, Muskegon River Watershed Association, and the Village of Hersey.
