Using the Earth Force curriculum, the Field Museum engaged teachers and students in environmental education in the 15,000-acre Calumet region of northeastern Illinois and northwestern Indiana. Through teacher workshops and direct classroom support, the Field Museum guided Earth Force participants in creating community action projects, such as planting riparian buffers, and hosting beach clean-up days. To add active environmental stewardship sites, the Field Museum and other Calumet Stewardship Initiative members provided training to prepare new stewards to become leaders at priority Calumet natural areas and provided ongoing support to the new stewards through mentoring and coordination. In addition, the Field Museum worked with the Calumet Stewardship Initiative to engage 10 new community partners in conservation efforts in the region.
