Kelleys Island Preserve Habitat Protection
Grant Recipient:  Western Reserve Land Conservancy

Grant Award:  $1,000,000

Lake Basin:  Erie

Project Location:  Kelleys Island, Erie County, OH

Project Description:  The Western Reserve Land Conservancy and partners will protect 112 acres of globally imperiled and rare habitat on Kelleys Island in Ohio through fee simple acquisition of 59 acres and conservation easement donations on an additional 53 acres. The tract to be acquired contains a globally imperiled Great Lakes alvar community found to provide habitat for at least 12 Ohio state-listed rare species. The other parcels to be protected through conservation easements provide important stopover habitat for migratory birds and habitat for other rare wildlife. All the parcels to be protected are adjacent to other protected lands, including the 667-acre Kelleys Island State Park. This project would help create an 825-acre interconnected system of protected land that would comprise one-third of the entire area of the island.
