Early Detection of Aquatic Invasive Species

Organization: The Nature Conservancy

Lake/River Basin: Lake Michigan

Project Description: The Nature Conservancy is establishing a program in northern Indiana, southern Michigan, northeastern Illinois and northwestern Ohio to detect invasions of hydrilla, a nonnative invasive waterweed introduced from Europe during the 1960s. The program will provide a framework to coordinate surveillance efforts among state agencies and community partners to increase the potential that new invasion events are detected early, when control efforts have their greatest chance of success. Project partners include the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Michigan Department of Natural Resources, Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, Illinois Department of Natural Resources and Ohio Department of Natural Resources.
