Buffalo and Niagara River Wetlands Wildlife Survey

Organization: Bird Studies Canada

Lake/River Basin: Lake Erie, Lake Ontario

Project Description: Bird Studies Canada is conducting a binational assessment of marsh habitat health within the Niagara River watershed and the Buffalo River watershed, in support of the Niagara River (Ontario), Niagara River (New York) and Buffalo River Remedial Action Plans. Marsh assessments will be based on biotic indices – derived from Marsh Monitoring Program volunteer marsh bird and amphibian data, and staff-collected macroinvertebrate data – and abiotic measurements of water quality and surrounding land use. Local networks of Marsh Monitoring Program volunteer participants will be expanded through targeted promotion, free orientation/training workshops and support for local volunteer coordinators.
